Where Passion Meets Thought

Personal

In my life journey I have been a scientist, university professor, author, software architect, and entrepreneur. I love ideas and creativity and have explored many intellectual disciplines. I have also been on a journey of the heart, exploring body, spirit, and emotions.

Much of my scientific work has sought to understand the nature of thought and to build intelligent machines. It has been my privilege to pursue this work at several outstanding universities and research laboratories where my students and I built new kinds of robotic intelligences which learned to see and move.

I have also had many wonderful experiences along a more heart-centered path. I am called to teach and to help others grow and find their gifts to the world.

Two practices have been especially transformative for me. Focusing is a powerful practice for inward insight and connection developed by Eugene Gendlin. I use it regularly for creativity, decision making, spirituality, and inner transformation. It meshes beautifully with the powerful communication practice of Nonviolent Communication developed by Marshall Rosenberg. I have participated in and hosted NVC practice groups for years. Both Gendlin and Rosenberg worked with Carl Rogers and their practices grew out of his humanistic approach to psychology.

I want to create a deeply committed relationship and view it as a wonderful and challenging journey. I’ve done powerful workshops on relationships and intimacy with the Human Awareness Institute, the Hendrick’s Institute, and Undefended Love. I want to start a family and am interested in effective teaching and parenting. I often volunteer with Challenge Day in powerful day-long workshops for teenagers that help them envision and create the lives that they want. I’ve done intensive men’s work with David Deida, New Warrior, and Whole Body Wisdom and participate in a long term men’s group. I studied massage at the Body Therapy CenterEsalen Institute, and Harbin and am a Certified Massage Therapist. I also studied trigger point therapy at the Heartwood Institute and am a Certified Neuromuscular Therapist. I often participate in a magical weekly ecstatic improvisational dance based on Gabrielle Roth’s Five Rhythms.

I’ve been involved with many businesses and am moved to help them better meet people’s deeper needs. I studied sales with Tom Hopkins, management with SkillPath, speaking with Toastmasters, personal growth with Landmark, entrepreneurism with the Software Development Forum and Garage.com, videography with Foothill College and Videomaker, and became a certified mediator with Marvin Schwartz
